MARRIAGE, HOME & FAMILY
November 17 - December 15
Opening Reception, November 17 5-8pm

Surrounded by debates regarding what constitutes a marriage, what defines a family and where the home lies, the Union Art Gallery showcases art by a variety of individuals who project their interpretations of this topic through a variety of mediums. Artists, non-artists, children, adults, students and professionals were invited to contribute work reflecting their definitions of marriage, home & family to this exhibition.

The exhibit takes the form of a giant visual quilt made from a number of 2' x 2' squares created by regional, national and international artists and commentators. These squares will address various aspects of marriage, home and family which may include; contemporary discourse about marriage, family planning and the economic influences on the family. The exhibition will also feature paintings by David Kasir and five installations by artists Katherine Biehl, Chrys Carroll, Naomi Shersty, Evelyn Patricia Terry, and Christopher Willey who will explore these issues in more detail by creating atmospheres that serve as rooms of a home, using a variety of decorative & utilitarian components to articulate their concepts.

MEDIA AND THE FAMILY

As part of the exhibit Marriage, Home & Family , the Union Art Gallery will host two film and video screenings to elaborate on the concept of the exhibition.

Class Dismissed: How TV Frames the Working Class

Followed by a discussion facilitated by Elana Levine, Assistant Professor of Journalism & Mass Communications

November 29, 7pm
Class Dismissed breaks important new ground in exploring the ways in which race, gender, and sexuality intersect with class, offering a more complex reading of television's often one-dimensional representations. The video also links television portrayals to negative cultural attitudes and public policies that directly affect the lives of working class people.

The Squid & the Whale
Followed by a discussion facilitated by Sue McCarthy, Assistant Director of the UWM Women's Resource Center

December 6, 7 pm
The Squid and the Whale follows the divorce of Joan (Laura Linney) and Bernard Berkman (Jeff Daniels) as it wreaks havoc on the emotional lives of their two sons, Walt (Jesse Eisenberg) and Frank (Owen Kline). The movie progresses with growing emotional force from the separation into the bitter fighting between Joan and Bernard and the hapless, floundering behavior of Walt and Frank, who act out through plagiarism, sexual acts, and drinking.

Marriage, Home & Family events are co-sponsored by the LGBT Resource Center and the Women's Resource Center and the UWM Union Theater.
