NATURE CLOSE UP: THE WORK OF JOHN COLT
September 22 nd - October 12 th
Opening Reception, September 22 nd 5-8 pm

John Colt looked throughout the natural world for inspiration. His paintings show the pleasure he took in nature at its most minute, presenting it to the viewer in ways that are both intimate and grand. Colt said that his work evolved out of looking at small facets of nature: “I've never been interested in the panoramic scenes as much as I have in the little areas – little realms of experience, nature close up.”

This retrospective exhibition of John Colt's art includes more than 40 paintings, prints, watercolors and pastels from five decades. Colt was a faculty member of the UWM Department of Visual Art from 1957 until his retirement as professor emeritus in 1990. He died in 1999 at the age of 73. He is considered one of the most important Wisconsin artists of the 20 th century. His paintings, drawings and prints have been exhibited in more than 100 shows in the state and around the country, including the Art Institute of Chicago, Library of Congress in Washington, and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. His work is in the permanent collection of the Whitney Museum in New York City. Twice his paintings were purchased through awards from the Ford Foundation.
