Rina Yoon & Waldek Dynerman
This exhibition takes place during the Americans for the Arts Annual Convention being held in Milwaukee, June 3-5. Rina Yoon is an Associate Professor in the Fine Arts Division at MIAD. A Korean-born printmaker, Yoon works primarily large-scale, using callograph technique, a non-traditional intaglio process. Her images address ideas of memory and identity, the conflict between past and present selves, and the desire to resolve this tension. Working within the realm of family dynamics and family history, Yoon creates imagery that evokes silhouetted figures that serve as empty vessels to act as carriers for the layered designs of color and texture. She explains that while the body is undergoing the continuous process of breaking down, evolving and shaping, it begins to serve as a container for memories, history and time. Waldek Dynerman is a Professor in the Fine He sees his work existing on several levels including the sense of sadness and sometimes despair, stemming from his family history of war and survival, most notably the survival of his Jewish father and grandparents during the Holocaust. After immigrating to America his sense of loss and displacement deepened and led him to continue his art making as a type of self-administered therapy as well as an attempt to communicate with others. Even though dark in its core, his work always contains an element of playful irony, and a hope for happy resolution to arrive. view the official e-announcement
