  1. Connect the iPod to your computer.
  2. If iTunes does not automatically open, open iTunes.
  3. Open the iTunes Preferences
    • In Windows, from the Edit menu, select Preferences.
    • On a Mac, from the iTunes menu, select Preferences.
  4. Click on the iPod button.
  5. For all iPods (except the iPod shuffle):
    • Select either Manually manage songs and playlists or Enable disk useNOTE: Telling your iPod to Manually manage songs and playlists will not allow iTunes to automatically update your iPod with songs that have been added or removed from your library since the last time you have plugged in your iPod.  If you still want iTunes to perform this action every time you plug in your iPod, simply select Enable disk use.
       6. For iPod Shuffle:
  • Click the Enable disk use checkbox and adjust the slider appropriately as to how much data and how many songs you wish to allow the shuffle to hold.
     7. On a Mac, the iPod will now appear on the desktop and in any Finder window.  On Windows, the iPod will appear in My Computer as a removable storage device.  Double click on the iPod and you are now able to drag files to this window and it will copy files to the hard drive of the iPod.

     8. Before unplugging the iPod from your computer, make sure to eject the iPod properly from your computer.

    • On a Mac, control-click on the iPod icon and select Eject.  You are now able to unplug the iPod from your computer.
    • In Windows, open My Computer, right-click on the iPod and select Eject.  You are now able to unplug the iPod from your computer.
As a general note, when plugging in the iPod to any other computer, make sure to not link your iPod to another person’s computer as this will format all of the information on your iPod and replace it with theirs.  This will only be asked of you if you selected the checkbox to Enable disk use on the iPod.  If you have selected Manually manage songs and playlists you will not be asked to do this
