Students
As a University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee student you are provided with additional resources through the Neighborhood Housing Office Listing Service and Landlord Rating System. Log-in with your panther id and open up the possibilities of the Neighborhood Housing Office website.
When you add listings to your favorites you will be able to go back to them quickly without searching. Keep listings you are interested in your favorites until you decide on your perfect rental unit. Print out a fact sheet of your listings and take them with when you view a property.
Are you living in a property but you have a room you’d like to rent out to another person? Maybe you only have one roommate but found the perfect three bedroom? Do your parents/guardians own the house you live in? This is the place to enter your ad.
Are you new to UWM? Do you want to find roommates? You can enter your own ad so people can search for you as a roommate. You can also search other people’s ads that are looking for roommates. Remember when searching for roommates that it is important to think about your personal living style and choices.
Do you have a great landlord? What about one that never fixed anything? Rate your landlord here and tell other students your thoughts on our community landlords. Looking for a new rental unit? Check here too. Make sure your potential new landlord rates within your standards.
There is a wide range of different resource that are available to students, landlords, neighbors, etc. Whether your issue is findind somewhere to eat around campus or your not sure how to file a complaint with the Department of Neighborhood Services, these different handouts can help you. You can also find a Commuter Student Handbook for students who do not live on-campus here at UWM.
After signing a lease all tenants are jointly and serverly liable for the rental period. It is important to understand all parts of a lease, including all non-standard rental provisions that a landlord attaches. Always discuss all points of interest with a landlord before signing a lease, including what is included in rent (water, electric, heat, cable/internet, parking), who is responsible for repairs, etc.
This links to a complaint form for landlord complaints (negligence, disrepair, etc.). This form may be filled out by long-term residents affected as well as by student renters. The complaint form assists the Neighborhood Housing Office in keeping track of less-than-ideal landlords. If filing a complaint you will need a copy of your lease (if you were provided one). Then the landlord will receive a letter stating a complaint has been received and will have 30 days to remedy the complaint. If the complaint is not remedied then they will be suspended from the Neighborhood Housing Office website for 6 months.
This section contains information about what to do when roommates are not getting along. It includes – among other things – a roommate contract. Also, COAST leaders are trained in conflict mediation.
Become familiar with regulations, events, and issues in your neighborhood(s).
There are a variety of different job opportunities offered to UWM students from an array of departments at the University. Not only does Pantherjobs offer information regarding campus employment but you can search area internships and other job opportunities.
Safety is a main concern of all students, parents, faculty, and neighbors in the UWM community. In this section you will find information on the S.A.F.E. program, B.O.S.S., UW Police, and the City of Milwaukee Police Department.
