Admitted into the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress and a landmark of ind ependent filmmaking, Michael Roemer’s 1964 drama about a blue-collar worke r struggling to retain his dignity is one of the most sincere and sensitive films about black life ever made. Duff, a traveling railroad laborer, ro mances and marries Josie, a small-town preacher's daughter while fighting tooth and nail to stay respected as a man. One of Ebony magazine’s Top 10 B lack Films of All Time and winner of the San Giorgio Prize at the 1964 Veni ce Film Festival.
